Research and development work at the Institute are focused on areas that have direct implications on the day-to-day practice of primary care for medically underserved patients. Adopting patient-centered strategies and promoting the implementation of evidence-based care are among the Institute's top priorities. Research is cross-disciplinary, involving medicine, dentistry, behavioral health, pharmacy, and nursing. We collaborate with a wide range of academic partners to leverage all the opportunities presented by our extensive, statewide delivery system and comprehensive data warehouse.
Currently there are dozens of research projects being conducted at the Institute focused on a range of issues in primary care including health disparities, care coordination, chronic pain, diabetes, dental care access and cancer screening. The Institute has a particular focus on projects that leverage technology to improve care delivery, including eConsultation, mHealth, and Project ECHO®, a videoconferencing intervention linking primary care providers and specialists.
